Understanding Florida Homeschool Annual Evaluations

Florida families registered in a district home education program are required to submit an annual educational evaluation. Students participating in the Personalized Education Program (PEP) have separate assessment requirements and do not submit the traditional district home education annual evaluation.

An annual home education evaluation is due each year on the anniversary of the date the home education program was established. If you are unsure of the date, refer to the confirmation email from your county Home Education Office or contact that office.

Many families choose a portfolio review conducted by a qualified Florida-certified teacher rather than standardized testing. Portfolio reviews can often be completed remotely, so the evaluator and family do not need to be in the same county.

Virtual and In-Person Evaluations

Depending on the evaluator, live discussions may take place through Zoom, WhatsApp, FaceTime, or similar platforms. Children’s work samples can be shared as scans or photos by email, messaging attachments, or file-sharing services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, or Amazon Photos. Ask your evaluator which methods are accepted and how the required student discussion takes place.

Cost and Qualifications

Families have reported finding portfolio evaluations for around $20–$50 per child in recent years, but fees vary and may be higher. For the certified-teacher portfolio-review option, the evaluator must hold a valid, regular Florida teaching certificate authorizing academic subjects at the elementary or secondary level. Florida allows other annual evaluation methods as well. Credentials have not been independently verified and should be checked.
